A great gray owl glides through a clearing in the forest, searching for its next meal. This was taken earlier this year in northern Minnesota. The late-day light was bringing out the orange bark and shoots of the tamarak pines that are characteristic of Minnesota’s north woods. Nikon D500 with Nikkor 500mm PF lens, ISO 800, f/5.6 at 1/1250th of a second.
I have some really great tamarack pine jokes, but they’re all prettt filthy, and since some kids coule be reading this blog, i think i’lll hold back for now.
Wow! Agree with your mom, never seen owl in flight or a pic of an owl in flight. They don’t seem to be the flying type. Just imagine them hanging out lazily in trees all the time. . . This is the coolest shot, with the blurred background, love it!
Whoa! I’ve only seen one once, at VINS [Vermont Institute of Natural Science in Quechee, VT]. It was part of their permanant exhibit for birds of prey that have been rehabilitated but not well enough to survive in the wild again. When a great gray owl stares you in the face, you feel like it’s seeing your soul. They aren’t frequent visitors in Massachusetts. They can be found in the north of the New England states.
Remarkable photo. Love the warm color palette. As usual, the drama is enhanced by the details: the spot of a bright yellow eye, totally in focus (both yours and his)! Hope he caught his evening snack.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a picture of an owl in flight. You can really see how flat the face is from this angle. Very interesting shot.

Like the great grey owl, your image is stellar!
