Here’s another one from last weekend in southwest Florida. Great blue herons were competing with night herons, green herons, little blue herons, anhingas, ibises and egrets for the best fishing spots. As the largest of the aforementioned birds, this great blue had no problem getting his fill of catfish. Nikon D500 with Nikkor 500mm PF lens, ISO 800, f/5.6 at 1/100th of a second, Godox V860iii fill flash.
Sean, that’s a great shot! Just reading your description: “Great blue herons were competing with night herons, green herons, little blue herons, anhingas, ibises and egrets for the best fishing spots” makes me hungry to one day visit SW Florida & aim my own 500mm PF lens at the birds. Well done!
Hi Sue, yes, there’s a great little trail near where my mother lives in Bonita Springs that opens to a swampy series of ponds. There’s a great variety of life in this one small area (including alligators and raccoons).
Great shot, Sean! I’ve noticed that the birds will congregate on the side of the pond where the light best lets them see their prey. As the light changes position, so do they! It’s always fun to see so many species together!

What time did you take this picture? Up here the swamps stop serving breakfast at 11 a.m. Does Florida have a more breakfast-all-day kinda vibe?
Beautiful clear shot showing the heron eyeing its catch. I photograph them often and I’ll attest to the fact that they love catfish in particular.
Thanks Rachel, and plenty of these “swamp fish” to go around down there.
