I’ve had lighting conditions like this a few times during the rainy season in Africa. We were in late-day sunshine, while the backdrop was dark and ominous with a not-too-distant storm fast approaching. Two young reticulated giraffes were fighting, swinging their long necks and delivering body blows with their heads (video to come). Nikon Z8 with Nikkor Z 70-200mm f/2.8 lens, ISO 220, f/4 at 1/2000th of a second.
Michael’s comments nailed it! Stunning image, Sean. The lighting on the giraffes against that dark, inky blue background couldn’t have been better choreographed. How do you do it? I know. You show up, hang in there & let your photographic skillset call the play.
Wow, wow, WOW! A silhouette in color! The contrast in colors is remarkable! They look so gentle, and graceful — until they’re not. Gorgeous! (And, a usual, the composition is perfect.)

Wow! f/4 = 3D with that slate background, green foreground, and sharp focus! Not to mention the timing!
Thanks Michael. The rainy season never disappoints with the light.

Ha, thanks Sue. Yes, a big part of it is knowing where to go and when and then letting nature do its thing and being there to record it.
It was an absolutely amazing thing to watch. Then a large male walked in and broke up the fight. You could hear them body slamming each other
No doubt Dee. I have a video of that large male breaking up the fight that I’ll get to soon.

Thanks Laura. I like that description.
Awesome shot!! I love light/skies like this when I’m out taking photographs. Just superb 🙂
Thanks Karen. Nothing like a good storm. Especially when the sun is shining.
