The giraffe weevil is one of the more interesting insects that I’ve photographed over the years. Aptly named as you can see, the males have necks 3 times the length of the females, although the ladies have long necks too. Males, like this one, are about an inch in length and it’s a sight to see them flying around with that extended neck. The adaptation helps them with nest building and fighting. Photographed in central Madagascar. Nikon D200 with Nikkor 80-200mm lens (at 200mm with Canon 500D close up filter) ISO 200, f/22 at 1/60th of a second, two Nikon SB-600 flash units.
Could be Louis, because as I was taking this shot, the weevil turned to me and said something about getting Medieval on my ass. I had no idea what he was talking about.
As a vertically challenged person, I can only image the issues this guy must deal with daily, hauling that neck around. At least he doesn’t get asked if he plays basketball.
Most unusual looking critter, Sean. Another great macro thanks to the 80-200 Nikkor zoom, the Canon D500 close-up filter & that you travelled to the other side of this globe to spot it!

Wow never even heard of this insect but spectacular coloring wonder to see
No doubt Aunt Sue. Next time I’ll have to try and get a flight shot.
Is that knobby thing halfway down his neck his Adam’s Apple? If so, he must sound like the Ving Rhames.
