I’m usually not a big silhouette fan. If I can record at least a little detail in the shadow areas I’ll do that — but in this case, I liked the way that the eyelashes and fur were rim lit by the rising sun. Plus, this was Karen’s favorite wildlife shot from the Botswana portion of our honeymoon, so it’s about time I posted it. Nikon D800 with Nikkor 200-400mm lens (at 400mm) ISO 800, f/6.3 at 1/4000th of a second
Very nice. I have a question though: how do you safely take a photo looking into the sun? I thought looking through a lens at the sun was even more hazardous to one’s eyes than looking at the sun directly.
Hi Suzanne, you are correct, I shouldn’t look through the lens (especially a long lens) at the sun. But sometimes I just can’t resist. I try to squint and not look directly at the part of the frame with the sun in it but I’m sure I’ve done irreparable damage to my eyes over the years. The smart way to take a shot like this is to use live view and instead of looking through the lens, just look at the display on the back of the camera.
Awesome I love it too. Good one Karen, she has a good taste 🙂 This shot is absolutely beautiful to me, and I love those eyelashes. How I wish to have eyelashes that long I wouldn’t be needing mascara then… heh heh.

Are you sure this giraffe isn’t testing Latisse on his eyelashes, one of your Grey clients?
Hey Mo, they are no longer our client, but this giraffe would have been a good model for them.
