Giant river otters live up to their name. They are big. About six feet in length. I was floating down a river in the Pantanal of Brazil when I saw these three enjoying the early morning sun. Nikon D300 with Nikkor 200-400mm lens (at 280mm) ISO 1600, f/5.6 at 1/640th of a second
I always thought that otters were cuddly ferret sized creatures inhabiting BBC documentaries, never imagined otters, “giant” or otherwise so large in nature.
Great image.
1 of the nature programs followed an extended group, several families together so that communal babysitting worked out great.
A very large crocidile went cruising around & fancied a handy meal. The otters grouped together & ‘Hazed’ him out of it. They simultaneously attacked as a group & nipped him under his tail, his underbelly while 2 of them nipped him around d snout. In no time at all d Croc knew he hadn’t a chance & after a few futile defensive moves & squirming around only to be bitten on a body part that he had just been guarding a few milliseconds earlier, he headed downriver(Amazon tributary) pretending that he had better things to do.
What was really easy enjoyable was seeing the kits watching while d babysitter tried to herd them back into the holt on the riverbank. A few days later a leopard or jaguar tried stalking them & they lead him a merry dance also.

Seeing the muscles on this trio, these otters could almost be mistaken for “rodents of unusual size” from a certain ’80s movie 😉
—– A hybrid trio comes
—– Flightless gryphons standing guard

They are clearly very strong – they must be really fast and agile swimmers. Great to see how healthy they look. Handsome!
Just seeing that title, I couldn’t wait to see the picture. Love the otters. these look a bit scary.
Wow!!!! Those guys are enormous!! I had no idea there were otters that big anywhere in the world!
