One of the reasons I love to add a visit to the north of Kenya to my itineraries is the gerenuk. I’m always on the lookout for their feeding behavior when they stand on their hind legs beneath acacia trees, feeding on the upper branches. This is a female, captured early in the morning, pre-sunrise. Nikon Z8 with Nikkor 500mm PF lens, ISO 1800, f/5.6 at 1/125th of a second.
I don’t let my 8-year old daughter look at pictures of gerenuks. They present unrealistic neck-image issues. I don’t want her to develop neck issues later in life.
Yes, it was a great first trip with it. I think more than the camera though, was my switch to auto ISO while manually setting shutter and aperture. I had been a 95% of the time auto aperture guy in the past but chose manual with auto ISO on this trip not caring if the ISO went up to 12800. The camera really renders high ISOs well, but I also think the editing software has gotten so much better at handling higher ISOs.

Thanks Jane. These guys are so fun to watch, especially when they lift up on those hind legs.
Cool shot! Worth you getting up so early.

Good thinking Louis.
