While creating his title character for the movie E.T. it is said that Steven Spielberg got the inspiration from a Galapagos giant tortoise. You can definitely see the resemblance. This handsome fellow was photographed in the Santa Cruz highlands on our trip to Ecuador in November. Nikon D700 with Nikkor 200-400mm lens (at 270mm) ISO 800, f/5.6 at 1/1000th of a second
What a distinguished profile you’ve captured here, Sean! Love your on-the-same-level-as-the-animal shots. The resemblance to ET is obvious. In Indian mythology the turtle is the creature in which souls inhabit on their way to nirvana, and since usually wiser souls make it to nirvana, that may be the way in which turtles became synonymous with the intellect.
I have never associated turtles with the intellect, only with their hard shell and their slowness. That being said, the resemblance to ET is quite apparent. And everyone loves ET.

Turtles are one of my very favorite animals, love this shot. I have photographed green sea turtles in Hawaii extensively….thanks for sharing!
Smart, methodical inspiring and beloved. All traits of this handsome creature and award-winning nature photographer. Nice shot.
