I had a great time photographing the dwarf mongooses that were scurrying around outside our tents in the Masai Mara. Always fun to have a few subjects back at camp. As the name suggests, these guys are the smallest of the 34 different species of mongoose in the world. More on them in upcoming posts. Nikon Z8 with Nikkor 500mm PF lens, ISO 2000, f/5.6 at 1/100th of a second.
What a cute little creature. The cozy coat on this mongoose is enhanced by the creamy bokeh of green-hued foliage that surrounds it. Not sure one would want to snuggle up to this critter, but the image screams softness. Very nice, Sean!
Many years ago I saw one run in front of the car I was in, chasing a snake. I was in Barbados. This, as expected, is a great shot. Enjoying the Z 8? I love my 2 Z 7ii camera bodies, but thinking of trading the newer one for a Z8 body.
Thanks Rachel, yes, loving the new camera. I’m finding the key is to be able to quickly change focus modes using function buttons. Subject detection is great, but in some situations you need to quickly switch back to old school methods.

Thanks Sue. This was around the camp site so I was able to find the best angle for that bokeh.
The green reflection on its coat is neat.

Cute. Can’t hold a candle to his slender cousin, but cute..
No doubt Tone. The slender mongoose will always be the finest mongoose.
