The diasia is just one of many clearwing species of butterfly in the genus ithomia that can be found in Central and South America. As the name suggests, the wings are translucent. It was interesting that they would take on a bit of a bluish tint, however, when the background was all that out-of-focus green foliage (as seen in the bottom photo). Both photos are the same exact butterfly, just photographed from a different angle and lens. Top photo — Nikon D800 with Nikkor 105mm macro lens, ISO 1600, f/8 at 1/320th of a second

As much as I like the coloring of the common monarch butterfly, this clearwing one is fascinating. It is amazing that you could actually see this one since it had see-through wings!
Amazing insect! The blue-hued wings also take on an opaque quality. Just as the quality/angle of light can make a big difference in the apparent coloration of birds, that same oddity is playing out in your clearwing butterfly image, Sean. Thanks for sharing.

Definitely Sue. You would think that they were different butterflies.
The intricate magnificence of nature is always astounding and awe-inspiring! Beautiful creature & lovely shots!
Thanks Amanda. I’ve been after decent shots of a clearwing for a while. I’ve seen them but usually in too bright, mid day light.
Gorgeous shot never seen a butterfly that look like that it reminds me of stained glass excellent
