The crested guan doesn’t get a lot of respect. At least that’s the way it seemed to me. They were around, but no one was getting too excited about it. They resemble turkeys in a way, especially given their size. This one was giving me a nice look at that red wattle, or dewlap. You also get a good look at the crest that gives these birds their name. Photographed in central Costa Rica. Nikon D800 with Nikkor 200-400mm lens (at 350mm) ISO 3200, f/4.5 at 1/60th of a second.
You know i think the real problem is that this bird don’t respect itself. Like it just met you a minute ago and already it’s showing you its bright red dewlap like hey hey hey. C’mon Guan, don’t do that. If you interested in Sean talk to him, get to know him, then you two can show each other your dewlaps in a mutually supportive environment. Besides, you show strange men walking through the forest your dewlap just like that you know they going to take a picture of it and put it on the internet, and then everyone gonna see it and be posting comments about your dewlap. You worth more than that Crested Guan. You have a lot to offer.
This bird looks smaller than the wild turkeys I used to see in New England and much prettier than the turkey vultures I see here in southwest Florida. Maybe it’s that attractive crest, or the smaller wattle. Whatever it is, this one is not so menacing. Thanks for introducing me me to yet another creature I had not heard of.

Nothing wrong with that bird – I’d be delighted to photograph one anytime. I find the colors fantastic!
