A while back I posted a common brushtail possum from Australia. Here is another species, the coppery brushtail. These guys are common in their home range, but that range is very small — restricted to the Atherton Tablelands area of Queensland in the northeastern part of the country. As you can see, it gets its name from the copper color of its fur — the common brushtail being much more grey. One of New Zealand’s biggest regrets is possums, not sure which one were introduced here from Australia, and they strip the trees of foliage and affect the habitat of our local bird population, and other species. There is much controversy about the 1080 poison they are using in an attempt to reduce the possum population.
That said Sean, it’s a great image, their eyes in car lights reflect back like cats’ eyes, they are dazzled by bright lights as they are are a nocturnal creatures. Your flash didn’t do that to your possum.

Hey Lawrie, yes, no eye shine on this one because I had the flash off, and away from the camera.
More impressed by the bark on the tree than this guy. I don’t think I’d be happy to meet him at night (not that he’d be thrilled to meet me).
