Aracaris are in the toucan family, although their beaks aren’t quite as large as true toucans. The chestnut-eared aracari ranges throughout the southern Amazon basin, including the Pantanal where I photographed this one just outside the lodge that I was staying at. Nikon D300 with Nikkor 200-400mm lens (at 400mm) ISO 800, f/5 at 1/1600th of a second
I am certainly learning a great deal of the beauties of this world. Do you suppose affording a 200-400 mm lens would help me take pictures like yours? John
It’s a great lens, although getting a bit old. The 80-400mm is much lighter and much cheaper. And there’s also a 200-500 that is much cheaper and lighter as well. You just give up a bit of speed with those two lenses (but only one stop) as they are f/5.6 at the long end.
You’ll love it Gray. September is the best time for jaguars, although they are possible all year. In August and September they are most likely to come to the river’s edge to cool off.

Wow!! Incredible colours & markings! Great to see it.
Thanks Con. This one was particularly patient and allowed me a very close approach.
—– Just an ordinary
—– Big nose looking to impress

Woah, is this real? I think I love birds now.
That one was for me. Because of your recent pics, I am trying to plan a trip to the Pantanal.

So purdy! And scary at the same time!
I’ve been looking at your pics for years. I like this one the best!
Absolutely beautiful photo…I love his bright coloring and the bold patterns on his beak!!
This is a cool-looking bird. The bill looks painted.
