A young cheetah surveys the landscape of Lewa Conservancy in Kenya. November is my favorite time to visit eastern Africa. The short rains are still in effect, but most days are sunny with cloudy blue skies and the landscape is lush and green. As for the cheetah, she had recently been reintroduced into the wild, but was still very trusting of humans — thus the wide angle perspective. Nikon D700 with Nikkor 17-35mm lens (at 17mm) ISO 400, f/6.3 at 1/1250th of a second.
Savannah looks like nothing like i expected. Where are the daring new young chefs redefining Southern cuisine? Where’s the cobblestones and the 18th century architecture? Where’s the strange southern gothic mood? It’s just grass. And a cheetah, apparently. Man “Midnight In the Garden of Good and Evil” was full of shit.
Thanks Dennis. Funny to hear from you, Karen and I were just talking about you the other day. I was very close. In fact, we were out there petting the cheetah. She was caught in a fence when six weeks old near a Masai village. A Masai warrior nursed her back to health and in this shot she was six months. She was still hanging out with the warrior who was our guide’s friend, but she was also getting out on her own.
Great shot! Obviously you were low to the ground, giving us a view closer to what the cheetah sees. (Daring, brave?!) She/he is beautiful, as they all are.

She seems to be posing for you probably curious seeing humans after being recently released as your stated
To roam & hunts& have a full life
She was very comfortable around us. Too comfortable. Karen actually kissed her.
Nice use of a wide angle lens, Sean. It really shows off the land & sky of the savanna habitat that this beautiful cat calls home!
Thanks Sue, I love when I can get close and go wide.
Fabulous shot. Great composition. With a 17mm lens, how close did you get to the cheetah?

Thanks Laura, yes, my favorite positioning, close, low and wide.
