We saw several cheetah sprints. In fact, we saw this same cheetah make a half-hearted attempt less than an hour before this successful attempt. Cheetahs are well documented as the fastest sprinters of any land mammal and it was a thrill to see this one in full pursuit. Things did not go well for the Thomson’s gazelle when it eventually lost its footing, and soon after, its life. The lack of awareness of the two zebras in the background underscores the random precariousness of life on the savanna. Nikon Z8 with Nikkor 500mm PF lens, ISO 360, f/5.6 at 1/2000th of a second.
I know, and we were so focused on the chase that we didn’t see them just going about their business. At least I did, but my eye was glued to that lens at the time.
In this scene I imagine that the Zebras are existentialists who smoke gallois cigarettes and speak with a French accent. “Life? Death? It is all zee zame for zee Zebra.”
This is simply an amazing shot! I love that this photo shows the wider view of the savannah, giving perspective to the vastness of the setting. But to capture both hunted and prey, legs in mid air is astonishing and depicts the full tension drama of the chase. The zebras in the background, doing their thing, uncaring or unaware, is the bonus part of the shot. Magical!!

Wow, what a capture!
How did the zebras completely ignore this?!?! Amazing shot!

Thanks Laura. I was hoping to be a bit closer but I agree that the wider perspective gives a true sense of life (and death) on the savanna.
