The return of everybody’s favorite giant rodents. These guys are very common along riverbanks throughout South America. In this case, I was in the Pantanal of Brazil. Typically capybaras weigh roughly 160 pounds, but there have been a few recorded cases of individuals hitting the scales in excess of 230 pounds.
Thanks. This one was taken with my Nikon D300 with the 200-400mm lens attached (shot at 240mm) handheld from a boat (ISO was 1600, shutter was 1/160th of a second at f/4). The VR on that lens (and all VR from what I can tell) works amazingly well and I very rarely use a tripod anymore for the kind of shooting that I do (hiking through forests in search of creatures, from vehicles or from boats). I only carry a small tripod these days for long exposure landscape shots. Also, I always leave the EXIF info on my posted shots so you can right click and then open up the shot to check the info.

They look so small, like Guinea pigs. These can’t be more than 30 pds?
OoOOOooo a family shot! You know what that means Crane! Stay tuned.
So, this is pretty fantastic.
Are you going to use this for your holiday postcard? “Greetings from the Cranes.” ;-))
Please name your equipment (beyond tripod). How do you get such wonderful sharpness?
