Cape buffalo are all attitude. No creature on the African plains stares you down quite like these guys do. This one was doing his thing in Ol Pajeta Conservancy in Laikipia, Kenya. Nikon D700 with Nikkor 70-200mm lens (at 200mm) ISO 1600, f/2.8 at 1/500th of a second
Hi Rachel, I only cropped a bit off the sides to make it a vertical image (originally horizontal). It was at 200mm but from the safety of a safari vehicle. Maybe 30 feet away.
Hey Con,
About 30 feet, but from the safety of a safari vehicle. The funny thing about cape buffalo, however, is that they seem to be the only animals that even look at the vehicles. Lions, rhinos, elephants, etc, act as if you aren’t even there.

great pic. looks like he could be quite mean,) just looking at horns is enough to scare you off. )
Physically, how far were you away from this creature?
Hey Bob, probably about 30 feet if I remember correctly. But we were in a safari vehicle so no real danger.
Your picture displays the character of the animal; it is fearless,
Yes, they almost look like they’re always daring safari goes to get a little closer.

So pretty.
I have the same question as rjk. He looks fearless and so close. At 200 mm I image you had a good crop.

I’m also wondering about the crop! Not a guy to get too close to.
