Cape buffalo are pretty much the curmudgeons of the African plains. They are considered one of the big five (along with leopards, lions, elephants and rhinos) but they’re the one of the five that nobody really cares too much about. Probably because they are pretty common. And look like cattle. I’ve always loved the George Washington-esque horns atop their heads. And the way that they stare you down as if they can’t believe you would dare come any closer. This one, however, didn’t seem to care too much about anything at all. You caught a great expression (or does he always look like that, haha?) Yeah, those horns are unreal! I’m sure they don’t care too much about us, either.
Those eyes and that brow – a virtual portrait. I like the muted greys along with the soft green backdrop. If a Cape buffalo can be described as lovely, certainly this specimen qualifies!
I don’t blame him for being curmudgeonly…he’s got a lot of weight to carry around on his head, looks like he’s made entirely of stone. Cool portrait of an interesting animal Sean!
Sean,
Is this creature the same thing as a water buffalo? If not, what is the difference between the two? I have heard that water buffalo are extremely fractious and so, dangerous. Is this true? How much does their ‘wig’ weigh? Do the females grow the horns or just the males? How big are they in pounds and approximate height at the whithers? This is a great picture with the shades of grey and all the textures. Thanks for sharing.
Once again, a great shot!

No, usually a bit more alert. I think this guy was stoned on that grass he’s eating.

great pic. I think this bufflo can be quit mean.
True Michael, they’ve even been known to chase off lions.
Muscle and sinew yardgoods and —- Bones shovels knives and used Tupperware —- Brought them on my back.

Why am I thinking of Walter Matthau right now?
No doubt Kim. He definitely has that look about him.
Haha awesome shot. And I love that you used the word “curmudgeons.” It’s probably one of my favorite words and it describes this guy perfectly.
Droopy ears and long eyelashes.
