I wasn’t sure which of these shots I liked best, so I figured I’d post the sequence. This is a Cape Barren Goose, native to southern Australia, including Tasmania. They were all over Maria Island, although as I mentioned last week when I posted the Tasmanian devil, they may not be there for long. The geese nest in open grassland, making their chicks easy prey. Many of them have taken to spending more time on the beach to get away from the devils. Some conservationists aren’t happy about the introduction of the devils to Maria Island because they weren’t there originally, but neither were the geese. They were introduced in 1968. Maria Island aside, the Cape Barren Goose is doing quite well in the rest of its limited range throughout southern Australia. They are very large and attractive geese that rarely swim, although they are capable of drinking saltwater. Nikon D800 with Nikkor 17-35mm lens (at 35mm) ISO 800, f/2.8 at 1/500th, 1/640th and 1/640th of a second, respectively
Whar a beautiful goose. Love its black high top boots! I see why choosing a favorite would be difficult. The hues in the sky add drama and i like the wave action in the third image. Why in the world did “they” decide to introduce the devil to the island?
Well, as I mentioned, the geese were introduced too. Maria Island has quite an interesting history, from penal colony to a kind of Noah’s arc. The devils are a highly threatened species and they are doing all they can to save them. The geese have a pretty good stronghold in other areas of Australia so I’m sure are not as much of a concern on Maria Island.
Love the black feet giving he illusion of boots. Yucky looking green seaweed in that one image. Is the water clear otherwise? These geese appear to be much larger than the typical Canada Goose we have living here in our pond.

What amazing images!
Wow, just wow. The colors and setting seem other-worldly, not to mention the cool goose.
Thanks Rick. Nice when nature does you a solid and it all comes together like that.

The water is clear, although I quite liked the green in the first image. Thought it added a nice element to the photo, framing the goose.
