Camouflaged Gecko
The photo above doesn’t look like much. Until you look a little closer. Toward the bottom of the tree on the right side, you can see the head of a mossy leaf-tailed gecko blending into the bark — its hand is visible to the left. Pretty amazing camouflage. This is the way that these geckos spend the day while at rest. They have dermal flaps that can break up their outline, and they can change color to match their surroundings. When awake, they can look somewhat like the giant leaf-tailed gecko below (I posted a close up of this guy about two months ago). This particular gecko is doing quite the opposite — trying its best to stand out and scare off potential danger (me) with its bright red mouth. Note the tail that gives these geckos their name. Leaf-tailed geckos can also jump from tree to tree, and this one had just leaped from a tree that better suited its particular skin color and pattern.

Now you see and then —- It’s gone trees to obligingly conceal —- This arborial cuttlefish .
The mossy green patches on the camouflaged really are a nice touch. I love the badass gecko, though. What an outrageous dude!
We depend upon the light —- To experience with delight and glee —- Some chromophoric trickery .
Now that is truly a wonder of nature! Amazing!
So. Cool!
You have taken so many extraordinary photos that I am running out of superlatives. As such, I resist commenting on your photo of the day. Today is an exception- the time, effort, and ‘luck’ that went into the photo above- extraordinary. Well done my friend!
Thanks Michael. Of course, I never would have seen the gecko without a good guide. They actually saw quite a few of these guys as I kept repeating, “where, where.”
I love this!!!
absolutely amazing capture of a shot and absolutely amazing creatures….we, mere humans, will never know or understand the depth & breadth of mother nature…
Very true Amanda. The adaptations of some of these animals are truly amazing. I love finding, and photographing, new (to me at least) and exotic creatures out there in the world.
wow! where did does this amazing little creature live?
Thanks Veronica. These are two different species of closely related leaf tailed gecko. The top guy is the mossy leaf tailed gecko and the bottom guy is a giant leaf tailed gecko, but they both can blend in completely to their environment and also “blend out” when they so choose. Both live in Madagascar, what I consider to be the most enchanting place on earth.
a pic. well done, keep up the good work, ( thank you for all the great pic.s, my be some day, my work will be as good as yours.thankyou for taking great pic.s.!
Thanks Micael. I always appreciate the comments.
wow !
A wonderful game of hide and seek. Now you see me now you don’t. Great images Sean. I saw a complete series of different animals that rely on camouflage to keep predators at bay or to hide from their next meal! 🙂
Amazing
