Thanks for all the comments yesterday. It’s quite evident that people like the Minnesota dentist are an exception rather than the rule. I don’t want to belabor the point, but one of the things that disturbed me most about the story was a photo of the hunter with a rhino kill. Rhinos are critically endangered. They are in much more dire straits than lions and on the brink of extinction. Especially black rhinos. Karen and I had the pleasure of meeting quite a few white and black rhinos at the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya a few years ago. This is a mother black rhinoceros with her calf. Here’s to places like Lewa that are doing their best to prolong the survival of these amazing animals. Nikon D700 with Nikkor 70-200mm lens (at 130mm) ISO 1600, f/2.8 at 1/13th of a second
Good idea Rachel.
As for rhino numbers, not all bad news. There are three remaining subspecies of black rhino (a fourth recently went extinct). The total number of black rhinos, however, is on the rise. A slow rise, but up to about 5,000. Protected areas like Lewa are leading the charge to bring them back.
Great images, ur Post is the one high point of my day when l access my email.
Kenya show the rest of the world how to thrive by protecting these beautiful animals & earning foreign currency through tourism instead of butchery.
When we were kids we were taught that using overpowering force unnecessarily was called ‘Bullying’.
The semi-tame lion was one example of deplorable perfidy but a Rhino goes beyond any sense of decency, as every human knows they are a threatened species.
All the existing ‘Trophy’ Rhino heads in museums & private collections in Europe have had their horns stolen, in most cases sawn off, over the last decade.
I saw a TV show where the rangers almost caught some well armed bandits. The horn was partially sawn off & for the welfare of him they sawed off the remainder of his horn to prevent further butchery.
Regards

Your image of the nearly extinct rhino and calf leaves me in awe, mixed with melancholy and guarded optimism.
great pic. grat color, how many do- think are left in the wild?
Thanks Michael. There are about 5,000 black rhinos left in the wild. That’s an increase of about 500 since 1995, so some good news.
5/9/2024 update: There are now approximately 6487 black rhinos in the wild according to the World Animal Foundation.
Mountain mist of tears
Blurs our vision of lifes transience
First they go then we .
Thought I read there are only a few left in the world. Another sad story. Post something funny tomorrow.
