It’s been a few months since a bear strolled past one of my camera traps. This beauty, either a female or young male, stopped by Sunday afternoon. Nice to get the blue sky and last remaining leaves still clinging to the trees. Most of the action this year has been at night so the diurnal setting was a pleasant surprise. Nikon D810 with Nikkor 17-35mm lens (at 19mm) ISO 500, f/14 at 1/200th of a second, Cognisys camera box, trail monitor and three remote flash units.
Wow! The black bears in my area (western MA) haven taken to also coming out during the day. Hibernation is nearing and they’re getting as much as they can before they hibernate. I was putting up a bird feeder and taking it in at night, but now that they are coming during the day, I’ll wait until the activity dies.
Love the blue sky in contrast with the golden leaves. Perfect background and foregeround for a black subject!
Thanks Rachel, yeah, the ones we. have around here never truly hibernate. Their activity slows, for sure, but we see them from time to time in the dead of winter. I’m still putting my feeders up soon, though.
So if there’s a black bear in your neighborhood, that implies that you live in the forest where we see the black bear. Right? If so, Sean Crane living in the middle of the forest, maybe in some kind of treehouse or tent, is very on brand for you.

I agree, nice seeing the bear in the daylight amongst the leaves. Diurnal is a word that’s not used often, good choice.
I know, kinda weird though because it’s opposite, nocturnal, is used quite often.
