I photographed this black-backed jackal very late in the day in the Kalahari Desert of Botswana. The landscape is so flat that the sun has nowhere to hide until hitting the horizon — enabling rich, saturated colors just before the light disappears. Nikon D300 with Nikkor 200-400mm lens (at 400mm) ISO 800, f/4 at 1/400th of a second.
Is that Jack Black’s Black-Backed Jackal? I get a lot flack for talking smack about Jack Black’s Black-Backed Jackal, But Jack Black’s Black-Backed Jackal was having a snack in the yard out back by the haystack when it attacked a hunchback and I had to tackle Jack Black’s Black-Backed Jackal. The episode still gives me flashbacks. Jack Black hasn’t properly trained his Black-Backed Jackal, and as a result he’s more dangerous than a diamondback or even the zodiac.
