And now for a completely different species of monkey — the black and white colobus monkey. I encountered these guys on the side of the road while driving through Uganda. Thanks to their somewhat unorthodox diet consisting of leaves that most other monkeys don’t eat, they can be found in isolated areas. That being said, in other parts of their range, they often fall prey to larger primates like chimpanzees. Nikon D300 with Nikkor 200-400mm lens (at 400mm) ISO 500, f/4 at 1/400th of a second
Never seen anything like it it looks like they’re wearing some expensive fur coat they’re just so gorgeous it looks like they’re having a meeting in the trees thanks again for all the amazing pictures one of the best parts of my day
I’ve seen detailed footage of a large troop of chimps hunting the Colobus down very cleverly by sending a few guys ahead who eventually turn & drive the Colobus backwards into a trap surrounded by several other hunters high in the canopy.
The Colobus, being much smaller & lighter, tried to escape by going higher onto the smaller branches which wouldn’t support the Chimp’ weight.
When he was surrounded the chimps broke the bigger branch that supported the smaller branch & grabbed the Colobus as he fell(this was to secure the 1st ‘Eating Rights’ to the ‘Hunters’ while the chimps on the ground got small pieces of Colobus thrown down to them).
The Chimps ate every bit of the Colobus except his hair. The footage lasted several minutes & was the 1st to fully record the sophistication of the Chimp’s hunt & level of intent & expertise as a group to drive the Colobus into a hunter’s trap. The reportage was following a troop of Chimps to observe their group dynamics & showed a far higher level of thought & strategy than was previously believed. The psrticular troop often hunted Colobus when they felt like a Protien urge this way & unlike nature’s other predators were mostly succesful in each hunt. The teamwork was the key to the operation. Not sure if it might end up on Youtube eventually.
