There were quite a few bighorn rams in Yellowstone this weekend. The ewes that I saw, on the other hand, were all just outside of the park. Rams and ewes only come together during mating season. The rest of the year the rams hang out in bachelor herds while the ewes hang out together and tend to the young. This guy was trudging through the snow looking for whatever vegetation he could find. Nikon D800 with Nikkor 200-400mm lens (at 340mm) ISO 400, f/4 at 1/2500th of a second
Actually, the ewes and rams do associate some this time of the year, at least that is what I have observed in YNP the last two years. I saw many ewes coming down yesterday and there was a group of 35-40 rams, ewes, and yearlings today near the Confluence pull-out. Last year they were together by the Yellowstone Picnic area.
Very impressive image Sean of a fine looking animal. Great combination, great photographer, great composition, amazing camera & lens combination. That 200 to 400 lens is beautiful and definitely the favourite in your kit for your work! Love it!
Nice photo. Five distinct annual growth rings on horns, maybe one more near bases. One growth ring per year plus lamb tip makes this a six or seven year old ram.
Great Photo…. I see this group often, I really liked the clarity of the Bison photo…with the snow moisture. Glad you came in for Pizza. Blessings on your next photo adventure! Sheila

Beautiful composition/ image Sean. And I sure this wasn’t one of those “roll the car window down and pop off a shot” photographs. Really impressive…
Thanks Michael, yes, I was out of the car and up on the side of the mountain for this one. But not too far from the car.

Thanks Michael,
I was out of the car, but not really on a hike. I was still close to my car.

Thanks Lawrie,
That’s true. I use the 200-400 for a vast majority of my shots. I still love to go a bit wider when the situation presents itself.
How to understand—-The arching horns and devil eyes—-Burning in the snow
His horns almost form a seasonally appropriate valentine!
Gorgeous. And I love Yellowstone.
Beautiful Shot!!!

Thanks Graham,
Good info. I was wondering about the approximate age of this guy. I saw a few that had horns that were a bit more developed.
What a handsome critter!
He’s looking at you. Better get out of there.
