Here’s another from this past weekend in northern Minnesota. These two young black bears seemed a bit smitten with each other. You can see the clear difference in coat colors between the two. Nikon D700 with Nikkor 70-200mm lens (at 82mm) ISO 800, f/2.8 at 1/200th of a second
Nice bear shot Sean. Great to see they’re engrossed with each other and not worried about the people in attendance. I don’t comment often, but always look. Thanks for what you do.
Sean, I’m curious as to why you didn’t use your D800? I’m about to trade my D3 in for either the D800 or the D800E. Any thoughts on that now that you have been using yours for awhile now?
Hey Michael, I used the D700 for that shot simply because it was the camera that my 70-200 was mounted to. I also had my D800 with me and that had the 200-400mm on it. I was mostly using the D800/200-400 combo but then those two bears came very close and I needed to widen out a bit so I just grabbed the other camera/lens. I love the D800. Didn’t think I was going to. I was waiting for the yet to be released D400 because I like the crop factor for my long lens. That camera never came so I picked up the D800 and have not regretted it at all. The files are huge, but that gives me plenty of room to crop when the creatures aren’t as close as I would like. I’ve had no problems with sharpness with the regular D800. The files feel like those from my D700, only 3 times the size. So I can’t really speak to the difference between the D800 and the D800E, all I can say is that I’m happy with the D800. Good luck.
Oh good, I’m glad the use of the D700 was not because you had abandoned the D800. I have seen some concerns expressed about how technique is far more important with the D800 because the slightest jiggle is magnified in those huge files. My D3 files at 12 megapixels don’t crop well, so I’m looking forward to 36 megapixels to do what you do, though it might be awhile before I can deliver so many marvelous photos as you regularly put up!
I’ve heard of, and seen, a bear hug, so to speak, but never, until now, a bear kiss. Looks like an “Eskimo kiss”, with the noses touching. Love this shot, Sean.

Love is in the bear.
Sweet shot. Had no idea that they kiss. Or show tenderness like this.
Oh this is wonderful! Thank you for sharing!!
Wonderful shot! Though I think they’re just smelling each other! How we love to put our human emotions on animals. 🙂
Yes, that’s true, and shortly after this moment they were fighting over positioning on that tree.
