Barrow’s Goldeneye (Correction — actually a Ring-Necked Duck)
The Barrow’s goldeneye is a sea duck that lives mostly in the Pacific Northwest, but can also be found in a few other pockets of the world. They were one of the species hit hard by the Exxon Valdez oil spill back in 1989. I photographed this male near Vancouver, Canada. Nikon D800 with Nikkor 200-400mm lens (at 400mm) ISO 800, f/4 at 1/1000th of a second.
I always thought it was. a damn shame they never held Juan Valdez responsible for that oil spill. Just because you bring the finest coffee from Colombia to the US on the back of a mule doesn’t mean that you can get our ducks all oily without any consequences.
This is who i’m talking about in case you’re one of those kids who spends all their times vaping and dancing on TokTok instead of respecting your elders and studying 1980s coffee commercials like god intended:
No problem. I rarely can identify the subjects of your wonderful photographs. I mostly take photographs of birds and spend a LOT of time trying to ID them. This just happened to be one that took considerable effort of figure out just a few months ago, so it was still fresh in my memory. Thanks for your blog — I don’t often comment, but seeing your posts always helps start my mornings off on the right foot. I admit to a bit of jealousy at all your adventurous travel destinations! 🙂

I like the eye’s orange reflection on the water.
They are lovely. I have spotted a few in my time here in No CA. Nice shot, shot!
Beautiful serene image. Love the perfect reflection. So lucky to have found this guy in such calm water.
Sean — I think this is actually a ring-necked duck. See: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Ring-necked_Duck/id Great shot!
You are correct. It’s a difficult one to ID as you don’t see the ring around the neck but only in certain light..
Thanks Karen. Appreciate the correction.
