There are about 20 species of bandicoots in Australia, all at least partly nocturnal. I saw a few when I was there back in 2006. This guy was spotted on a night walk in the Atherton Tablelands in Queensland. I had to be quick as the bandicoot only posed for a couple of shots before scurrying back into the bushes. Thanks Kathy. The largest males can grow to about two feet from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail, and weigh about 3 pounds. Females are quite a bit smaller.
As usual, many of your shots put me on research mode! Good thing I have flex time at work and don’t have to be in at 8 am sharp. The bandicott is a marsupial omnivore, similar to a possum. They’re endangered and protected by the Australian government. Here’s the link for ‘those of you who need to know.’ http://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/animals/bandicoots.htm

I love your photos..but never know the scale of the creatures. How big is a bandicoot, for example? I do look forward to the daily photos. Thank you!

Great shot…you were right on your game!
Why the long conical nose? Do they feed that way? do they forage with it? Are they distant cousins of the anteater?
