This is a banded mongoose, photographed in the Masai Mara of Kenya. Unlike other mongoose species that live solitary lives, the banded mongoose lives in colonies. This particular mongoose and the rest of its colony lived in a network of burrows that was right next to a bat eared fox den. The banded mongoose will also live in close proximity to baboons and warthogs — foraging and actually being handled by the former, and picking ticks from the latter.
I can’t stand looking at those meercats for some reason, but this guy has character standing there looking directly at you. Love the weed that strokes his body. Made me smile. You are a clever dude, Sean!
I was going to mention that he reminds me of the meercat…is there any realtion among them? This guy holds his arms and hands the same way but appears to be somewhat fatter. He is not as amusing as the meercat, however. Which isn’t to say that Shardae couldn’t have a field day “decorating” him!
It’s good to discover how the mongoose lives in a symbiotic relationship with the baboons and warthogs.
I wish humans could get along with others who are different than themselves as well. Cute photo! Thanks for sharing the photo and your description.

Hey Michael,
That weed kept on moving in front of the mongoose’s face and I had to work around it. Glad you appreciate the effort

Hey Mom,
Yes, the meerkat is in the mongoose family. They have quite a few similarities.

Uh oh…is that a challenge Mama Crane?
I accept. Stay tuned.
