The only baby penguins that I saw were the kings (all the others start hatching in December). The kings hatch at that time too, but they take much longer to develop so I was seeing second year chicks. This is just before they begin to molt and lose all those brown furry looking feathers on their way to becoming adults. They hang out in groups known as creches while the adults are out at sea for months at a time. Much more on these guys in the coming weeks. Hey Dennis, with a fisheye it’s all about how you hold the camera. If the lens is angled down at the subject, the horizon line will arc up in the middle of the image (the more the lens is pointed down at the subject, the more the distortion). Tilting the lens up creates the opposite (the horizon arcs down in the middle of the image). By angling the camera straight ahead, the distortion is minimized. This image is slightly cropped to eliminate my shadow at the bottom of the image. I was very close to the penguin, one or two feet.
Love the close-up. Would never believe that was feathers and not fur. Thanks for letting me see so much of this world that I would never get to see myself.

Nice. How do you use a 15mm fisheye and not see much distortion? How close did you have to get to him to get this shot?
