It’s getting to be that time of year again that Atlantic puffins return to their nesting sites along the Maine coast. I photographed this one a while back on Machias Seal Island. Nikon D300 with Nikkor 200-400mm lens (at 400mm) ISO 400, f/4 at 1/5000th of a second
—– I recently learned that
—– Some humans
—– Along the Puffins flyway
—– Prey on these and similar
—– Birds catching them
—– With nets as they fly home
—– Though it’s no different
—– Than other human activities
—– Have they no shame
—– I guess death is what happens
—– When you’re making
—– Other plans .
I’ve taken that trip to Machais. One of the most wonderful experiences of my life. I was in the blind to the far left [the 1st one to be assigned]. I was sorry to not have a longer telephoto before I got there, but from that blind. I had to pull in my 70-300! The rocks are so close to the blind opening. It was a magical experience. I love their call. Sounds so mechanical. https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Atlantic_Puffin/sounds

Nice!!!
Looove the puffins!
Where do they spend the rest of their time?
Aunt Sue
They spend the bulk of the year out on the open sea.
Perfect, as I am currently in Maine.
Love the puffins.
Say hello if you see any. The moose too.
Love me some puffins!
Beautiful shot of such a sweet looking bird, with a harlequin face! I loooove them!
Thanks Laura. They are quite harlequin-esque aren’t they.
