Just a simple portrait of an Atlantic puffin calling. This one was taken on Machias Seal Island off the coast of Maine. The island is claimed by both the United States and Canada. Every summer, thousands of Atlantic puffins, as well as razorbills and a few other birds, return to the island to nest. Nikon D200 with Nikkor 70-200mm lens (at 200mm) ISO 200, f/4 at 1/640th of a second
Great shot of a beautiful puffin. The puffin is on my list of birds I would one day love to photograph. They are not easy to get close to though as I understand puffins prefer rocky islands off mainland shores. That inevitably means water transport is required. Still, one fine day . . .
My trip to Machais to photograph the puffins was a major highlight in my lifetime. I was in the blind to the far left and the birds were so close you could have put your hand out and touched one. And the 70-300 VR worked perfectly. Some of the other blinds demanded a longer focal length. I love their chain-saw sounding calls! Since I’ve been there they’ve installed live stream cameras in several areas. I watch them all summer long. One is inside a nest. It’s amazing to observe. http://www.ustream.tv/explorepuffins
