This is an African wild dog. Or, if you prefer, an African hunting dog. Or a Cape hunting dog. Or a painted dog. Or a painted wolf. Or a painted hunting dog. Or a spotted dog. Or an ornate wolf. It’s called all these things. It’s also in trouble in Africa and listed as endangered due to human overpopulation, habitat loss and predator control killing. I was lucky enough to find this guy and the rest of his pack of about twelve or so in the Linyanti Swamp area of Botswana.
Gad, he looks smart enough to be Fed chairman. Actually, too smart for that! But I’ll bet the oldest joke of his species is to say, “I’m all ears.” Just a gorgeous shot. I’ll never love blue eyes again.
Hey Mom, not so sweet. They are considered one of the most ruthless predators in Africa, attacking as a pack and devouring their prey before even killing it.
Thanks Robert, one of the things that I like about doing a photo a day is the challenge of always making sure that I have new and interesting shots to post. It keeps me motivating to get back out into the field as often as possible.

I love the round ears…
“M-I-C

M-O-U-S-EEEEEE!”
Incredible shot – I can almost feel his fur. This is my favorite to date! Excellent eye contact.
Thanks Darlene,
Finding the wild dogs was definitely one of the highlights of my Botswana trip.
Fabulous. I love this guy!
Thanks Amy.

And to think, this one had relatively small ears compared to the others in the pack.
He almost looks like he wouldn’t hurt you…but then, he’s wild, right? so I guess you can’t trust them not to attack. But he looks sweet, actually.

Very good. I enjoy getting your photos everyday. You never present a poor shot. Good work
