Late afternoon on three days in a row I watched as a pod of orcas patrolled the shoreline in search of a quick meal. They were after seals, sea lions and even penguins. It was pretty amazing to see the speed at which they charged at a group of gentoo penguins. Whether or not they were successful I couldn’t tell. What I could tell, however, was that there were several young orcas swimming alongside the adults. In the top photo you can see both a large and small dorsal fin. In the bottom photo, you can see three orcas, two adults and one baby. I only saw one complete breach and unfortunately my camera was not to my eye at the time. Thanks Maria, the second one was taken very late in the day and it was much more dark than the image appears so I was getting that nice twilight light.

I feel foolish. But I can only see two in the bottom picture. Is this like Where’s Waldo?
I think it’s an adult behind an adult with the baby in front. They’re really jammed together. At least that’s what I see.
Correct. The two big fins belong to two different adults, with the little guy in front, closest to camera.
With fin and flank they —- Tease our wonder at their lives always —- Veiled by the moving sea
This is way better than seeing them in captivity at Sea World!
Very Nice!
Well, that makes my day so much better.
Sean, I’m guessing you’ve seen Blackfish? Amazing documentary.
Yes, the director is a friend of mine from Denver.
Yes, I remember when she did the other documentary with Tor!
The color and lighting in both of these shots is beautiful.
