Acorn woodpeckers love their acorns — so much so that they drill special holes in tree bark to store them for later use. In this photo, you can see the perfectly sized hole for each acorn. They are primarily a western and tropical species, ranging from California, down through northern South America. I photographed this one in the Santa Monica Mountains of California. Nikon D800 with Nikkor 200-400mm lens (at 400mm) ISO 800, f/4 at 1/250th of a second.
On the 13th hole of the golf course in the community where I live, a palm tree is riddled with round circles, the size of an acorn. I have maintained these holes are the work of a woodpecker. Friends of mine say I am wrong, these are holes made by by an errant golf ball! Now I have your picture to prove my point! (Although there are neither acorns nor golf balls stuffed in any of them!) 😊
I absolutely love this photo of a woodpecker doing his job. What a store of acorns he’s collected! I just wonder how he prevents pilfering from his woodland companions.

I just put my acorns in my wallet. Saves time.

How cool! I’ve never noticed a tree with acorn holes before.
Love that shot of the acorn woodpecker & its stash of acorns!
On a recent hike I came across a tree with precision holes in it and wondered what could had made them. This picture is very interesting.
