Other than the jaguar, the maned wolf was my next best sighting while in Brazil. I had to take a local bus sixteen hours, followed by a two hour drive, to make it to this location in Piaui State. The first two nights I was there, I did see a wolf, but being nocturnal animals, it was after dark. On the third night, however, a wolf came creeping around while there was still a bit of daylight left. You can see why they call them foxes on stilts. They aren’t foxes, however, nor are they wolves, but rather they are a unique species of canid — the tallest in the world. As for the “mane,” it isn’t quite visible in this shot, but it is that black fluffy tuft of hair that starts on the head and continues down onto the back. What a remarkable creature, Sean, and it only took an 18 hour trip to get to the spot to photograph this wolf? Well done! Patience, endurance and perseverance are essential factors in wildlife photography. You have mastered these!
No doubt Rick. I was questioning the effort on the way there, but once there I was certainly glad to have made it. Marmosets, macaws, monkeys and owls also at this location.
Thanks Aunt Sue, and yes, as a nocturnal animal, I was hoping that one would show up just before dark. As it turned out, I had at leas a half an hour before nightfall.
He’s both amazing and a little scary he’s like the runway model with those legs of the Wolf species amazing shot I love it so much never saw anything like it thanks for always being the best part of my day

What an absolutely beautiful image Sean!
Thanks Hope. I was really trying to get low on this one to show the length of the maned wolf’s legs.
What an interesting looking creature … it does indeed look like a fox on stilts! Great shot 🙂
Thanks Karen. Yes, quite aptly nicknamed.

Thanks Sue. Yes, patience not only in the field, but getting to the field as well.
They are leggy creatures! Well worth the trip, I would say.

You might see one in the Pantanal. They live there too.

looks like he is trying on high-heeled boots!
