Not that I have any complaints about our Eastern grays or American reds, but squirrels in other parts of the world can be pretty cool. This is the Malayan giant squirrel (also known as the black giant squirrel). S(he) was hanging around in a tree by my tent in Kaeng Krachan National Park in Thailand. They range throughout a good portion of Southeast Asia and live up to there name with a total body length — from nose to tip of tail — that can reach four feet. Nikon D500 with Nikkor 200-400mm lens (at 400mm) ISO 1600, f/4 at 1/1250th of a second.

Up to 4 feet long – wow! That’s a squirrel with some authority. I would certainly sit up and listen if ever I encountered one. Any estimate, Sean, as to how long your specimen was?
I’d say it was close to four feet. I saw three or four of them and they were all about the same size (but that includes the long bushy tail that you can’t see in this picture). Very cool seeing them run through the trees.
We had a large pin oak tree in our front yard, and it’s resident squirrel would throw acorns & branches at us when we were working in the yard below. A four foot squirrel would really pack a punch and send me to the great indoors!

Wow! The mere size of that squirrel would send our North American squirrels running for cover!
No doubt. With the size difference they seem like a completely different animal.

Man, that’s one big squirrel!
