I decided to go tight on this one to highlight the skin on an elephant’s torso. Elephants are so big and you can get so close to them (when in a safari vehicle, of course) that it was easy to go edge to edge with the cropping. An elephant’s skin can be more than an inch thick. This particular elephant was in the Olare Orok Conservancy, a private concession just north of Kenya’s Masai Mara Reserve. Although the skin of these mighty pachyderms reminds me of baked salt flats,
they ignite a warmth in me so full. Their enormous capacity to connect with life makes me feel as though those wrinkles are my own – so many miles away. Thank you, Sean.
This could very nearly be mistaken for a view from a great distance of some arid corner of the earth. They are amazing creatures and it is disheartening, to say the least, that they continue to be hunted by poachers. What will be poached when their ivory is extinct?
