This is the Wolf I Didn’t Photograph in Yellowstone this Weekend
This is the twelfth time or so that I’ve been to Yellowstone — and I’ve still yet to get a usuable shot of a wolf. That’s the way it is with wildlife photography. One day you’re witnessing the rarity of a leopard stalking a pangolin in Africa and the next, you drive around all day in “America’s Serengeti” and don’t come back with a thing. So until I finally get that elusive wolf in the wild, here’s one I took about six years ago in a drive through animal park in South Dakota. This is sad news. The wolves are all being killed off by hunters in surrounding states. God forbid a wolf should take away an opportunity for a human to kill an elk for themselves. Except that wolves glean the sick and unfit from the elk herd and thus improve the stock, while hunters only take prime animals that should be left to propagate a healthier eco-system. I also think these sub-humans can’t stand to see a creature more intelligent than they are. Unfortunately, wolves do not have guns, poison, and helicopters to keep this battle on a level playing field.
Don’t worry Susan, what goes around, comes around. The wolves will survive simply because of the intelligence you mentioned and the fact that they are needed here. A few people try to ruin things for everyone. It is the story of life, but right usually prevails. Sean’s pictures educate us and those who kill innocent animals for sport will not be thrilled with the ramifications of their need to feed their power. No good ever comes to man who sheds innocent blood. It is the universe balancing things. The wolf picture is lovely. I adore his golden eyes. Thank you, Sean.
